Winterizing Your Pool
- Remember, because the pool water temperature is much colder in the winter, bacteria grows much slower, and therefore, the pool requires only a fraction of the summer chemicals.
- Due to the slower growth rates of bacteria, pool circulation times can be cut back to 4-6 hours/day depending on your pool size. Check with your local pool service for the
proper circulation for your pool.
- Do not under any circumstance drain your pool in the winter months! High water tables can literally lift the pool out of the ground, destroying the pool. Always wait until the summer months to drain and change your pool's water, which should not be more than every few years.
- If temperatures drop below freezing in your area, wrapping your pool pipes at the equipment pad is suggested.
- As the rainfall slowly fills the water level in the pool, make sure to drain water out of the pool keeping the water at the middle of the tile level. If the water level rises above the tile and water gets between the tile and the bottom of the deck, the weather stripping can be damaged allowing dirt into the pool and causing deck problems, especially in areas where freezing can occur.
Should I use a pool cover?
Although difficult to remove and replace, a pool cover serves many useful purposes. In the early and late summer months, a pool cover provides free heat in the pool, while keeping dirt out of the pool and preventing excessive evaporation. In the winter, the pool cover will keep most of the leaves and debris out of the pool.
What do I do when temperatures drop below freezing?
If your pool is not equipped with an anti-freeze unit, remove the time dog switches. They are located on the face of the time-clock unit. Turn the pool equipment on until temperatures rise above freezing.
Do I still need to clean the pool in the winter months?
Yes. If leaves and other debris are left to sit on the plaster, they can cause staining. Leaves not removed from the pool can also block filtration, causing the pump to malfunction.
